Overview
This project focused on designing a challenge-based feature to encourage consistent rider activity and increase long-term engagement within the app. The experience was designed to motivate users through clear goals, progress tracking, and light social competition—without disrupting existing ride flows. Riders enjoyed tracking rides but lacked motivation to return consistently once basic tracking needs were met. Primary success metrics: challenge participation rate, repeat usage, and rider retention.
Goals
• Increase weekly active usage through recurring challenges • Encourage consistent riding behavior over time • Improve discoverability and participation • Strengthen community engagement through shared progress
Contraints
• Needed to integrate into existing app structure • No changes to core ride-tracking functionality • Tight delivery timeline with limited development bandwidth

Process
Research
I analyzed popular fitness and activity-tracking apps to understand how challenge systems drive sustained engagement. Key Insights: • Clear duration and effort expectations increase participation • Visible progress indicators increase completion motivation • Lightweight social signals encourage participation without adding pressure These insights informed the structure and hierarchy of the feature.
User Journey
The Ride Challenge feature was designed to support measurable improvements in: • Making challenge discovery intuitive • Tracking progress over time • Receiving completion feedback • Reducing steps required to join
Design Strategy
The feature was designed around three principles:Key Design Decisions: • Clarity Present essential information (duration, difficulty, participation) at a glance.• Guided Entry Flow Reduced friction by allowing users to browse, join, and track challenges in just a few steps. • Motivation Reinforce progress through visual indicators and milestone states. • Scalability Create reusable components that support future challenge types.
Final Design
The final solution introduced a dedicated Challenges section where users can: • Browse and join active challenges • Track progress in real time • View leaderboard rankings • Review completed challenges The interface balances clarity and energy, aligning with the brand while supporting long-term engagement.

Outcome
The Ride Challenge feature was designed to support measurable improvements in: • Making challenge discovery intuitive • Tracking progress over time • Receiving completion feedback • Reducing steps required to join
The updated onboarding flow:
Clearly communicates value upfront
Breaks setup into manageable steps
Uses visual hierarchy to reduce cognitive load
Guides users smoothly toward activation
